Earlier this year, I started fostering a little pup by the name of Shadow. He was so nervous and shy at first, he would dart and hide in the shadows every chance he could (hence his name Shadow). He would run from the light and into darkness. He wasn’t use to my type of lifestyle. His previous lifestyle involved isolation, brokenness, and abandonment.
I thought about having a puppy, but just not right now. It seemed it would take up too much of my time, or get into the way of my relationship. I had to have a perspective change. In hind sight, I was looking for a perspective change. In fact, Shadow helped grow my relationship closer, because are communication became better. I became a more thought out individual of how I would spend my day. He gave me a more urgent sense of responsibility.
I had never really had a puppy or understood how to be a good leader to it. But by becoming a better leader to Shadow, I was able to see things in a different light. Through time, dedication, and love, I’ve been able to create a bond with a unique being. I never knew what this experience would bring. I thought I was just helping a dog out for a few weeks, and it would be cool to have him around for a little while. But in fact, I couldn’t give him up. He had become apart of my lifestyle, and sewn into our family fabric. He made me better.
Shadow has taught me a lot about Community (because there were parts of my community and people that I had never visited), He taught me about Leadership (because in order for others to follow you, you have to understand how to lead them), and lastly Commitment (because you have to commit to the responsibilities before you, and once you do that, you grow in more ways then you’d imagine). It puts a little something back into you when you help nurture something back to life. And if one can achieve this with little effort towards a dog, how much more can we achieve if we really tried towards one another???
Give it love.
Whether it a plant, an animal, or another human being. Give it love. We all need love to grow. And by sharing the sunshine we too are growing ourselves.
